The Association of Global Automakers expressed its support for a proposed rulemaking requiring Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications capability in all new automobiles in comments filed with the Department of Transportation (DOT).

"As vehicles become more connected and automated, it is important that the policy environment support the deployment of this lifesaving technology,” said John Bozzella, president and CEO of Global Automakers. “This is smart regulation that will make our roadways safer and create a competitive marketplace for further safety applications." 

In its filing, Global Automakers strongly supported DOT’s proposal to require Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology using the full 5.9 GHz Safety Spectrum so that all makes, models, and brands across the fleet can communicate with each other to avoid crashes.  

"Our roads will be shared by various levels of automated and conventional vehicles. V2V and the safety spectrum are the code that will connect this network and ensure vehicles can communicate in the same language without interference,” said Bozzella.  "We look forward to continuing our work with DOT, the Federal Communications Commission, and other stakeholders to ensure V2V technology becomes successful in the marketplace."

Global Automakers’ Safety Spectrum Coalition, which represents a broad group of industries, highway users, technology, consumer, and safety advocates, also filed comments in support of the V2V proposed rule.  The Coalition seeks to ensure that the 5.9 GHz safety spectrum band remains available for the full deployment of DSRC technology.
