The Association of Global Automakers (Global Automakers) urges Congress to consider a flexible, holistic view on automated vehicle regulation in a statement to the record regarding the Senate hearing entitled “Hands Off: The Future of Self-Driving Cars.” The attached statement was submitted on behalf of John Bozzella, President and CEO of Global Automakers.

Advancements in connected and automated vehicle technology present significant opportunities for enhancing mobility, saving lives, improving transportation efficiency, and reducing fuel consumption. These groundbreaking technologies are also introducing unique, complex policy issues that will require collaboration on behalf of all levels of government, industry stakeholders and the public to resolve.

As automakers continue to make substantial investments in the research and development of advanced technologies, there should be a national approach that enables the effective and widespread adoption of new technology. A strong, informed leadership role on behalf of the federal government will help provide meaningful guidance for the development of cohesive and complementary policy that is responsive to current and future technology.
