Association of Global Automakers Statement

Washington, DC, April 30, 2015 – Global Automakers is pleased with the introduction of the bipartisan Senate Judiciary bill, the Protecting American Talent and Entrepreneurship Act (PATENT Act).  Auto manufacturers are among the largest patent holders in the world, and a strong, efficient patent system is vital to the industry’s continued success in the United States.

There are several reforms that the industry believes are essential to deterring frivolous and abusive patent lawsuits, such as strong fee-shifting provisions, heightened pleading requirements, and limiting discovery before the claims of the patent are construed.

Patent law and intellectual property rights protections have allowed automakers to invest billions of dollars into their U.S. operations to create innovative and technologically advanced products for the U.S. marketplace.  These investments in research, design and development have created thousands of jobs and shaped a competitive auto industry that works to continually increase consumer choice.

We believe the PATENT Act is a good starting point to strengthen our patent system.  Global Automakers sent a letter thanking the bill sponsors for moving patent reform forward. You can view the letter here.
