WASHINGTON, DC, JANUARY 25, 2012 – In the State of the Union address, the American people only heard about the Detroit 3 automakers- acknowledging just a portion of today’s U.S. auto industry.  Let’s not forget that other global auto companies have contributed to the growth of the U.S. motor vehicle industry for several decades.

Global Automakers’ members today employ over 80,000 Americans at their U.S. manufacturing facilities.  In the past 30 years, our members have invested more than $43 billion into their U.S. operations in addition to the billions of dollars their dealers and suppliers contribute to this economy.

Last year, 67 percent of the vehicles our members sold in the U.S. were produced in North America.  Not only are Global Automakers members major contributors to the U.S. economy, but through their investment into research and development, they have become  leaders in pursuing innovative ways to reduce CO2 emissions to protect the environment and lessen the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels and improving vehicle safety.

It’s important to remember that the participation of the entire American auto industry is essential to meeting the nation’s economic and environmental goals, providing stable employment and growing the U.S. manufacturing base.
