ARLINGTON, Va. – The following statement was issued by The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM) in response to the release of the Roof Crush Rollover test results by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

“Rollover crashes are unpredictable and violent events. Unfortunately, injuries can occur even if there is minimal roof deformation after a crash. At other times vehicle occupants are unharmed even if there is significant roof deformation.

“AIAM supports NHTSA’s comprehensive approach to reducing both the risk of rollovers and also injuries to occupants when rollovers do occur. This includes rulemaking to upgrade the roof crush resistance requirements of FMVSS 216 and also new ESC regulation and ejection mitigation research.

“AIAM appreciates the Insurance Institute’s efforts to gain additional research data on the relationship between roof strength and the outcome of single-vehicle rollover crashes, and we will continue to conscientiously review the results of their studies along with other data currently being developed on this serious issue.”
