Automakers, Dealers and Massachusetts R2R Coalition Launch Effort to Educate Voters that Right to Repair is Already Law

Boston – Both sides of the Right to Repair issue came together today to announce the start of a united effort to inform Massachusetts voters that the Right to Repair ballot question – Question 1 – is no longer necessary as Right to Repair is already law.

Joint Consumer Protection Committee Chairs Senator Tom Kennedy and Representative Ted Speliotis – who helped negotiate and shepherd the agreement through the Legislature – joined representatives from the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition, Massachusetts State Automobile Dealers Association, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, Association of Global Automakers, and the independent repair community at a State House news conference to launch an effort to educate voters on the Right to Repair law. The group issued the following joint statement:

“This summer, supporters and opponents of the Right to Repair bill agreed on a legislative solution to the issue which has since been passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

“We wish to acknowledge the significant efforts of the Chairs of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection Representative Ted Speliotis and Senator Tom Kennedy in the development of this agreement, recognize original bill sponsors Representative Garrett Bradley and Senator Jack Hart for their support, and thank Speaker DeLeo, President Murray, House Minority Leader Jones, and Senate Minority Leader Tarr for ushering this legislation through their respective chambers. Right to Repair is law today because of their commitment.

“The new Right to Repair law ensures a level playing field where all auto repair shops – both independent and franchised dealers alike – can compete for your business based on reliable service at a fair price.

“The Right to Repair law is a victory for everyone. Consumers and independent repairers benefit because information and tools will always be made available for purchase. Automaker innovation and intellectual property and dealer investments are protected.

“Despite the fact that Right to Repair is now law and the ballot initiative is no longer necessary, it is too late to take the question off the November ballot.

“Voters can support the Right to Repair law by skipping Question 1 altogether on Election Day.”
