On July 14, Global Automakers sent Massachusetts Joint Transportation Committee Co-Chairs McGee and Straus a letter of opposition for H 2977 and S 1841 in advance of a July 15 public hearing. The bills create certain requirements for testing automated vehicles in the state, and directs the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to create safety and performance standards by which the general public may operate automated vehicles.

Global Automakers suggested in the letter that, to encourage automated vehicle technology in Massachusetts, the state should first evaluate the extent to which existing laws and traffic codes address or would impede testing, as it may be the case that the Commonwealth can exercise executive actions to remove those impediments, opening Massachusetts for business to automated vehicle technology. The Association respectfully urged the co-chairs to take no affirmative action on the legislation.
